Outside Business Journal was founded in 1984 under the name SNEWS (Specialty News). For almost four decades, we’ve served our community of brands, retailers, nonprofits, advocacy groups, PR agencies, media outlets, and outdoor recreationists as the most trusted source of news in the outdoor industry. We also publish an award-winning print magazine of the same name.
Outside Business Journal is a carbon-neutral publication thanks to our partnership with Cooler.

How to submit an op-ed
Do you have a unique, powerful opinion on a timely outdoor industry-specific issue you’re dying to share with the rest of the industry? OBJ is always seeking op-eds to be published on our website and promoted to our audience of 130,000 monthly readers.
We’re seeking outdoor industry professionals who can write succinctly and thoughtfully about B2B issues that will get people talking. Timely topics are best, but if you have an evergreen idea, we’re happy to consider it. Please note that not all ideas will be accepted.
In the past, some of our most successful op-eds have examined the following ideas:
- “The outdoor industry makes way too much stuff”
- “Outdoor models don’t represent real women”
- “Five reasons outdoor retailers should hire more parents”
- “To be a true force, we need the Outdoor Retailer trade show”
Op-ed entries run between 400 and 600 words and are unpaid. We require a headshot or similar photo to accompany the piece, and we reserve the right to fact-check all accepted submissions for accuracy, edit for clarity and length, and cancel or postpone publication of any piece if necessary.
