On Dec. 30, 2021, a wildfire fueled by 100-mile-per-hour winds tore through multiple communities in Boulder County, Colo., destroying more than 1,000 homes and structures. The victims had only minutes to escape; many had to leave behind everything they owned in order to escape with their lives.
In response to the hardship caused by the event, a coalition of local Colorado businesses have coordinated a donation drive called The Phoenix Project to provide some relief. Working within the channels of the Boulder-based coworking space and incubator Black Lab Sports, The Phoenix Project is now receiving donations for much-needed items—clothing, sleeping bags, gloves, hats, socks, and more.
Founders of The Phoenix Project are imploring the outdoor industry to come together and help a community that has supported its business faithfully over the years. So far, more than 40 businesses and institutions have pledged donations, including Patagonia, Fjällräven, Black Diamond, Spyder, KUHL, Adidas, the University of Colorado Boulder, and our own parent company, Outside Inc.
There are a number of ways for individuals and businesses to get involved. To donate items, visit the group’s donation portal. To make a financial contribution, go to coloradogives.org/bouldercountywildfirefund. And if you wish to volunteer at the group’s distribution event on Feb. 12 in Boulder, when the items will be given away to those in need, visit the sign-up portal here.
