As part of its mission to address the needs and interests of people 50 and older, AARP is launching a free fitness program and challenge that begins June 1.
AARP members in six cities — Chicago, Las Vegas, New Orleans, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C. — received an entry form to fill out and return to a participating IHRSA health club in their area. Each participant who signs up will receive a free two-week membership to the gym. Those who visit the club at least two times by June 16 will be entered in a drawing for a free 12-week summer training program.
“One man and one woman per club will be randomly selected and given this opportunity to reach a new level of fitness!†AARP’s website said. The winners’ training will take place from June 12 to Sept. 12. At the end of the training period, one male and one female participant from each city will win a grand prize award — a free trip to Las Vegas to attend “Life@50+,” AARP’s national member event and expo. The winners will be chosen based on improvements in fitness and lifestyle changes. Click here for more info about the member event.
Health clubs participating in the program vary by area. In San Francisco, the list is full of 24 Hour Fitness Sport gyms, while Chicago has various independents names. A full list of participating health clubs can be found at www.healthclubs.com/aarp, the IHRSA associations club roster since it is working with AARP on the club side of the promotion.
Life@50+ Expo takes place Oct. 14-16, 2004, in the Sands Expo Convention Center in Las Vegas. Interactive exhibits include the AARP Pavilion, new and future technologies, travel and leisure destinations, products and services, and celebrity entertainment. It also includes morning fitness warm-ups and intergenerational activities, and energy centers focused on health and advocacy.
SNEWS® View: Well, hot dog! So get-fit and weigh-off challenges aren’t just for the young, but also for the young at heart! We love it! And we also hope there is a gaggle of seniors participating, all of whom get media exposure so they can set good examples for the nation. You know, with the booming 50+ population, it seems a few manufacturers ought to raise their hands to participate in this.
