NEMO recalls Stargaze Recliner chairs after 14 break

The Stargaze camp chairs were sold at REI, L.L.Bean, and specialty stores, and were also recalled in February for a strap failure.

NEMO and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have issued a recall for about 7,500 of the portable swinging and reclining camp chairs due to a defect that causes the chairs to collapse.

The plastic joint supports, or hubs, attached to the chairs’ legs can break, posing a fall hazard, according to NEMO and the CPSC. So far, consumers have reported 14 incidents without serious injuries, the CPSC reported.

Three models of the chairs—the Recliner, Recliner Low, and Recliner Luxury priced at $180 to $220—were sold at REI, L.L.Bean, specialty outdoor stores, and at nemoequipment.com between November 2017 and June 2018.

“We’ve sent posters and letters to all retailers who carried the chair, as well as sending direct communications to consumers who we know purchased the chair from us,” said Kate Paine, VP of marketing.

In February 2018, NEMO and the CPSC recalled more than 15,000 of the same model camp chairs after reports of a strap failing.

“At NEMO, we’re an innovation company,” said Paine in a statement. “We’ve always sought to push the envelope with new and unique products, and our design process often requires technology that never existed before. When we designed Stargaze Recliner we created a completely new way of sitting, with a hanging and swinging chair supported by molded hubs and an aluminum frame.”

She continued, “Recently, we discovered a manufacturing defect in the molding of these hubs for three production lots. Though this is a limited number of chairs, any NEMO product that does not meet our high standards for quality and longevity is unacceptable to us. For this reason, we announced a voluntary recall of Stargaze Recliners that were produced in these three batches. Similar to the first recall of Stargaze, we came at this challenge proactively and reacted quickly, acting out of a desire to have the highest quality product in our customer’s hands.”

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled chairs and contact NEMO Equipment for a free inspection and, if necessary, a free replacement chair.
