SNEWS® is adding staff to its full-time team and is pleased to announce the addition of David Clucas as our new senior writer. Clucas will be based in our new SNEWS offices in the AIM Outdoor Group headquarters in Boulder, Colo.

“We are thrilled to add David’s energy and editorial talent to our team,” said Michael Hodgson, president of SNEWS. “As we continue to grow and add responsibilities, it has become increasingly important for us to establish a strong editorial presence in our Boulder offices.”

Clucas started on Jan. 14, but his name won’t be new to some of you: Already he’s reported and written several stories in the last few weeks that appeared online in SNEWS in both outdoor and fitness departments, and he’ll be working with us on our new project, the Outdoor Retailer show daily news magazine, OR Daily, Jan. 20-23.

“I’m excited to join Michael, Therese and the rest of the SNEWS team with their strong tradition of great outdoor, fitness and winter sports industry coverage,” Clucas said. “I look forward to sharing my business reporting experience, along with my passion for an active lifestyle.”

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Penn., and also spending many years in Cincinnati, Ohio, Clucas is a graduate of DePauw University. He began his career in journalism early, printing his first in-house family newspaper at 6 years old, and working for both his high school and college newspapers. His love for the outdoors and being fit and active began with childhood summers hiking in the Italian Alps while visiting his mother’s relatives.

Clucas worked for two daily newspapers in Indiana and Ohio before realizing his true calling out west in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Since 2003, he has called Boulder, Colo., home and, like many locals, is hooked on the region’s plentiful sunshine and active lifestyle. He spent the past six years working for the Boulder County Business Report, where he won several national awards for his coverage of the real estate and banking industries.

In his free time, you’ll find Clucas outdoors hiking, camping, biking and snowboarding – frequently accompanied by his furry, Frisbee-fetching, four-legged sidekick, Shrek. Clucas also enjoys cooking, learning, working out and getting out of the Boulder bubble to travel.

With one hello, though, comes a good-bye of sorts, to Marcus Woolf, who has been a part of SNEWS as a contract editor since we launched our online and publication business in 2002. Woolf has decided to reduce his role at SNEWS to occasional freelance assignments while he explores other opportunities in the book and consumer magazine world.

“Marcus is like family, so saying good-bye is extremely difficult, but we wish him well and are pleased he will continue to grace our pages with his wit and byline from time-to-time,” said Therese Iknoian, editor in chief of SNEWS.

Said Woolf, “I really appreciate all the opportunities that SNEWS has given me. Most of all, I got to work with a great group of people who are much more than colleagues—they are true friends. And, along the way, Michael, Therese and Wendy (Geister, SNEWS managing editor) have helped me to be a better writer and a more skilled journalist. I can’t thank them enough.”

“I’ll continue to be involved with the outdoor industry, working for various magazines and websites. I’d like to now focus more on writing feature stories about people in the outdoors and adventure travel, plus I have a book idea I’d like to pursue. I’m really excited about the opportunities ahead,” he added.

Those attending Outdoor Retailer Winter Market will have an opportunity to say hello to Clucas, and good-bye to Woolf personally as both will be working for the OR Daily team.

To contact Clucas, you can reach him by email at dclucas@aimmedia.com.
