DeFeet’s Air-E-Ator socks have become the rage in road and mountain biking, as well as with runners on trails or roads. And with good reason. They’re ultra lightweight, durable and cool on the feet. At OR Summer Market the SNEWS team were given samples of the company’s prototype trail running, hiking, backpacking sock.

These 100-percent wool socks are what most people would consider mid-weight hikers. On the trail and around camp, they proved to be some of the most comfortable socks tested in a long time. That’s due in part to their snug foot-hugging fit and comfortable feel against the skin. Adding to that confort is the extra padding at the toe, heel and ankle. Moisture transport off the feet on long hot hikes was excellent.

Ah, but the designers in their infinite wisdom have decided to alter the prototypes we tried and loved — The final version of this sock we are told will be in a 50/50 blend that, according to DeFeet, will not detract from the overall performance. We were also told the company plans to add a bit more toe and heel padding.
The final product is expected to be available around the first of the year.

SNEWS Rating: 4.5 hands clapping (1 to 5 hands clapping possible, with 5 clapping hands representing functional and design perfection. This rating is based on testing of the prototype, an updated rating will be posted for the market version when it becomes available.)

Suggested Retail: $12
