In a Sacramento Bee (Calif.) article on Feb. 28, 2006, titled “Retailers Shrug Off Ikea Rivalry,” specialty furniture retailer Don LeBuhn, owner of Evolution Home Furnishings, was asked if he feared a loss of business to industry giant Ikea opening in his turf. He offered the following words of wisdom all retailers might want to consider taking to heart: “I think they keep you sharp and focused on service. But I don’t think that their customer is my customer. Ikea is in a different business — disposable furniture. But, I still have to be aware of what they are doing and avoid moving in their direction. Ikea or no, it’s the guy who’s not willing to change who’s losing.”
