Boreal Design, a Quebec, Canada-based sea kayak manufacturer, has partnered with H2Outfitters, a Maine, U.S.-based outfitter, to offer a Freedom edition of the Ellesmere Sea Kayak to raise money for charitable organizations. “After all that happened on 9/11, I was looking for a way to help,” said Jeff Cooper, co-founder of H2Outfitters. “Instead of sending a donation to organizations distributing funds to the victims and not knowing where it would end up, I decided to look for a way for the kayak industry to help,” said Cooper. As Cooper was brainstorming ideas, he came across a flag that he had purchased years ago. The unique design of the flag with fireworks bursting from the stars inspired him to find a kayak company that would be willing to apply the flag motif to a boat and donate a portion of the sales to charitable organizations. Cooper contacted Boreal Design since he has been paddling its Ellesmere kayak exclusively since it was launched and the company managed to shoehorn the new design into production at the new factory. The Freedom edition of the Ellesmere Sea Kayak will only be offered in a limited edition because of its high expense to create. However, interested paddlers will be able to see the new boat starting in April when it is premiered in Charleston, South Carolina, at the first of many Sea Kayak Symposia and related events scheduled to take place along the East Coast. The Freedom edition of the Ellesmere will be available for sale by H2Outfitters starting in June. From each sale, $100 will be donated to a non-profit organization selected by the purchaser in the purchaser’s name.
