In picking its “100 Best Corporate Citizens” for 2002, Business Ethics magazine says of the publicly held companies: “What’s telling is that financial performance gets only one-seventh weight in the ranking. Companies make the list for serving seven stakeholder groups well, and stockholders are just one. The other six are employees, the community, the environment, overseas stakeholders, minorities and women and customers.” Companies doing business in the outdoor market include Timberland at No. 14, and 3M at No. 34. IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Fannie Mae were the top three ranked companies.
