When asked to choose an answer to the following question, “You are lost in the woods and a storm is coming, who would you choose to lead you to safety?” respondents to The Great Outdoor Survey voted for Homer Simpson more often than President Bush. Sen. Barack Obama came out on top when it comes to leading Americans out of the woods during a storm, while Sen. Hillary Clinton was a close second and Sen. John McCain ranked third.
If the choice is finding a conversation partner for a long day hike, Oprah Winfrey tops the list with Bill Gates coming in second, the Pope garnering third, and George Clooney nabbing fourth. Yes, President Bush was a last choice yet again.
And who wins as a partner for a long bike ride? The nod goes once again to Obama, with Hillary coming in a close second. President Bush did manage to nab a very distant third – perhaps because he’s an avid mountain biker?
SNEWS® received a brief summary of results from The Great Outdoor Survey, which was jointly sponsored by USA Today’s new lifestyle publication, Open Air, and CGPR, a public relations firm based in Massachusetts. Full results from the survey will appear in the fall issue of Open Air some time in September.
International Communication Research conducted the survey, and results are based on calls to 1,027 individuals, with results adjusted to reflect the U.S. population.
SNEWS® View: Homer a better guardian of safety and well-being for more Americans than President Bush? That pretty much sums up the state of the nation in our view. It’s either a clear vote of no-confidence in our current president (not hard to imagine) or a clearer indication we’re all watching way too much television and need to get outside more (also not hard to imagine).
