Fisher-Price may be giving the fitness industry a helping hand with its new Smart Cycle by teaching good exercise habits early to kids.
Designed for 3- to 6-year-olds, Fisher-Price describes the Smart Cycle as a “Physical Learning Arcade System” — a stationary bike, learning center and arcade game system all rolled into one for $100 retail.
The Smart Cycle plugs right into the family’s TV, ready to take kids on what the company calls “learning adventures.” It so happens they also pedal and get exercise at the same time. As they pedal, characters guide them through learning discoveries, games and races, with multiple levels of play for different ages and stages.
Kids can pedal, steer and learn at their own pace, visiting stops like Math Mountain, Shape Lake, Number Fields, Letter Creek, among others. They can also race with cars on-screen, against the clock or with another player. And when they want to stop and rest, the Smart Cycle has a joystick on the console that involves kids in other games and activities.
Fisher-Price is touting that it teaches kids spatial reasoning, motor skills and problem-solving, as well as spelling, counting and shapes.

SNEWS® View: We say it also gives them some exercise and sets the stage for physical activity being something fun and not drudgery. Not to say that getting a kid to simply run and jump and dance wouldn’t also do. However, since being active is often about following the lead of those adults in your life and so many adults are sedentary, the Smart Cycle could be a neat little “toy” to encourage the movement that will keep a kid healthy. Either way, it’s an intriguing combination of mind and body games. Heck, it looks fun enough that we at SNEWS would like to give it a whirl.
