Recently released is Forbes’ 2007 list of the “200 Best Small Companies” in America. To qualify, Forbes said candidates had to have a revenue of $5 million to $750 million and share prices above $5 as of Oct. 1 — according to return on equity, as well as sustained sales and net profit growth over 12-month and five-year periods. Too much debt, signs of a downturn in the future or a whiff of legal troubles were all disqualifiers.

Overall, the outdoor and fitness industries barely made a blip on Forbes’ radar, with a few exceptions.

Not even on the list in 2006, Under Armour (NYSE: UA) landed in the top 10 at No. 3. Deckers Outdoor (Nasdaq: DECK) also broke the top 10, ranked at No. 9. Quite a jump from its No. 47 ranking in 2006. And, Hibbett Sports (Nasdaq: HIBB) was No. 49 — up from No. 77 last year.

Forbes also noted, “small businesses are dynamic — and sometimes volatile.” Annual turnover of the companies on its list is also an indicator of volatility, and this year the turnover reached its highest level since 2002.
