Seems Gander Mountain is putting the full court press on Cabela’s of late. As we reported in a recent “In the News” story published in our Law Review division, the Courthouse News (www.courthousenews.com) has reported that Gander Mountain is suing Cabela’s in federal court claiming Cabela’s is gaining an unfair advantage by misinforming Texas customers about whether Cabela’s is collecting sales taxes. And then, on Jan. 7, the Northwest Indiana Times (www.nwitimes.com) reported that Gander Mountain has been lobbying state officials to prevent government subsidies being offered to a proposed Cabela’s in Hammond, Ind. Gander Mountain is also lobbying against government subsidies for a Bass Pro Shops in Portage, Ind. Apparently, a public relations firm that works for Gander Mountain sent Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and officials at the Indiana Economic Development Corp a report titled, “Leveling the Playing Field: Making the Case for Limiting Government Incentives for Retail Development.” The report was paid for by Oppidan, a Minnesota investment company that is the exclusive developer for Gander Mountain. The same study has reportedly been distributed to legislators in Illinois, where Cabela’s has plans for another store in Hoffman Estates. To read the full story, click here.
