Jim Whittaker, the first American to summit Everest and the former president of REI, is lending his name and image to Altrec.com in a two-year cross-promotional deal inked earlier this week. Shannon Stowell, VP of business development for Altrec, told SNEWS® that the deal involves very little money and is structured to be more of a mutually beneficial opportunity for both Altrec and Whittaker. “There are opportunities for both of us to earn revenue from the deal and at the end of it all, he walks away with a Web site, which is the most valuable part of the package for him,” says Stowell. Whittaker’s site — due to launch in July at www.jimwhittaker.com — will be designed and powered by Altrec and, according to Stowell, focus on telling his story from past to present and then offer up tips as to what Whittaker intends to do in the future. The design of Whittaker’s site will be similar to others that Altrec has done for special programs — www.ontheamericantrail.com and www.crownofafrica.com. “Our internal motto is ‘from inspiration to activation’ and Jim provides just that motivation through his speaking and life. In his talks you are encouraged, inspired to go out and attack your own personal Everest.” Whittaker will promote Altrec in his book tours and speaking engagements, and participate on-line at Altrec with special Web events and by providing content to the Altrec site.
