National Trails Day held on June 1 saw 617 events, held in 49 states, as well as in Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. More than 59,000 trail enthusiasts participated in American Hiking Society registered events, with 26 National Recreation Trails designated in 16 states. The designation took place on the eve of NTD by Secretary of the Interior Gail Norton.
