SNEWS® View: While significant in size, the real story is not the amount of cash Outdoor Retailer’s trade shows contribute to the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA), but the fact that this amount now only represents a little over 30 percent of OIA’s operating budget of $2 million. It wasn’t long ago that Outdoor Retailer dollars made up the vast majority of the operating budget of the association. OIA president Frank Hugelmeyer told SNEWS®, “The object of the organization is to diversify the funding.” Where does the other $1.45 million come from? Product sales — including surveys, special reports, etc — membership dues, foundation grants, and more. Nicely done OIA!
