Outdoor companies are once again represented well in the Fortune magazine “100 Best Companies to Work For” announcement yesterday. W.L. Gore moves up to 34 from the 35th position last year. Patagonia leaps to 41 after sitting at 58 last year. Land’s End rests at 53 — and was not listed last year. REI climbs to 62 from 65 last year. Timberland slips a few notches to 65 from 54 last year. And Rodale? Apparently the challenges that company faced this year were reflected in employee satisfaction — they fell off the list completely, though we suspect it’ll be back in contention soon. Fortune establishes the rankings by surveying company employees to measure pride in work, job satisfaction, etc. as well as researching benefits, company policies and work culture.
