In mid-October, rumors starting circulating that Paddler magazine, and its trade publication Paddle Dealer, were shutting down. Glen Bernard, publisher of Paddler, told SNEWS® nothing could be further from the truth. Fresh from a recent American Canoe Association meeting (ACA is the owner of Paddler), Bernard told us the board reaffirmed strong support for the future and growth of Paddler. And, so far, this year he told us, ad sales are up around 14 percent and ad pages are also up. Not bad for a publication that is allegedly closing its doors.
So why did the rumor originate? Likely because Paddler found itself caught in a squeeze as its long-time printer filed for Chapter 11. As notes were called in sooner than usual because of the bankruptcy reorganization, Paddler found itself in a bit of a cash squeeze resulting in the printer holding its September/October issue hostage. Bernard told us that instead of shipping the issue Sept. 11, it didn’t go out until three weeks later.
Bernard told us that all issues have been resolved and from here on, it will be smooth paddling for Paddler.
