The publication of the final reports into the 2001 foot and mouth crisis in the UK leaves open the possibility that large parts of the countryside could again be closed to combat any future outbreak of the disease in Britain, according to the Outdoor Industries Association, the UK’s trade outdoor group. “We are disappointed that among the 80 recommendations made in the report on lessons learned not one specifically addresses this issue,” said OIA Chairman Andy Airey. “We are asking the government to clarify the circumstances in which they may permit paths to be closed together with details of how any closures and subsequent re-openings will be agreed and communicated.” A recent report by UK leisure research specialists Mintel estimates sales of outdoor clothing and footwear fell by 60 million GBP (USD $93.9 million) as a result of the combined impacts of foot and mouth disease and this year’s mild weather.
