Well, it had to happen, we suppose, but putting Rainbow Lodge on the market is just one more example that once John Slouber sold Royal Gorge Ski Resort in 2005 to Bay area developers Todd Foster and Kirk Syme, things were never going to be the same. The rustic 1920s inn, home to many an outdoor clinic, and loads of memories for many of us in the outdoor industry, is being sold for a cool $7 million, and that includes 114 acres of surrounding land and artesian wells that supply water to the lodge. Locals fear that this is a precursor to further focus on developing the remaining acreage of the Royal Gorge Ski Resort. In a local newspaper report, Linda Stoddart, Rainbow Lodge’s reservation manager, was quoted as saying, “I think people just have to embrace the future. It could be even better.” Let’s hope.
