Claiming to be a magazine “run by skiers, for skiers,” Ski Press made its debut this month. “We’re not MBAs,” the lead editorial states, “not venture capitalists, not anything but a gang in love with the queen of sports, the embodiment of grace with gravity, the quintessence of fun in winter.” Wow, hyperbole rules. Ski Press is a freebie. At least that’s what that same editorial says. Not far below this statement is a subscription form to send four issues of this free publication to your doorstep for $12.95 a year. Is Ski Press any different than any other alpine ski magazine currently on the market? No, except that it’s a tabloid and that its New England-Quebec roots and slant are pretty obvious. In fact, the first issue is a melange of stories just as easily found in Powder, Ski or Skiing. Our favorite is the new gear story. Ski Press’ gear-testing team is a humungous 72 skiers strong. It’s hard enough to run a test with eight skiers, let alone 72. Will this ski magazine survive? Only issue No. 2 will tell. For a look go to www.skipressmag.com.
