Fitness Business News, the newsy monthly paper and newswire service that launched for the club segment in April 2007, has gone dark.
Fifteen months after its first issue, the large-format paper, run by United Publications, has ceased all publications and emails, publisher Rick Rector told SNEWS®.
“It’s true. The decision to pull the plug was really a combination of factors,” Rector said in an email. He cited editor John Craig’s departure to Planet Fitness, tight economic times that made landing advertising dollars tough, and a push by United Publication’s CEO to pull the plug to save money.
On its website (www.fitnessbusinessnews.com), a note only reads, “We’re sorry that Fitness Business News has suspended publication of both the print and electronic editions, as well as the weekly NewsWire.”
“Despite our best efforts and an overwhelmingly positive response to our editorial product, we just weren’t getting the traction with advertisers we wanted or needed to continue,” Rector wrote. He noted he was able to place all employees who wanted to stay in similar jobs at United.
“The bad news is that I met many great people who I will miss,” he said.
Fitness Business News was announced at the Club Industry Show in October 2006 as a newsy and independent alternative to IHRSA’s publications. Its first edition appeared in April 2007 at the IHRSA show. It shut its doors officially July 1.

SNEWS View: We must say that it’s a pity indeed since FBN had offered clear, concise, unbiased real news with a clean newspaper format that we at SNEWS found refreshing. Editor Craig and assistant editor Brian Davidson did an admirable job scrambling to get solid news covered but also to fit in some interesting features. But there are indeed a lot of publications fighting for club and vertical advertising dollars and, as the new kid, it may have gotten the short end of the stick. We wish Craig and Davidson luck in their future endeavors.
