Did you hear?… World's first marathon at the South Pole

Do you have an over-developed yearning for over-the-top adventures? Don’t mind the cold? Like long distances? Then maybe you’re a candidate for the world’s first marathon at the South Pole. Organizers have scheduled the race in January, during the South Pole’s summer, when the temperatures only sink as low as negative 13 degrees. Terrain? Try snow drifts and ice fields. Adventure Network International, a Canadian firm, is organizing the 75-runner event. ANI asks that entrants have competed in at least four marathons and have a background in mountain running and high-altitude, cold-temperature endurance events. The entry fee is $25,000 and those accepted will undergo assessments of their health and running ability. ANI operates a private base on the South Pole, which sits on the polar plateau’s 9,000-foot altitude. They have been taking tourists to the South Pole for more than 15 years.
