After 15 years in business, parent-company Earnshaw, a New York-based, family-owned firm, abruptly informed employees that Footwear Plus, as well as children’s magazines Earnshaw’s and Small World, were ending publication.
Greg Dutter, Footwear Plus associate publisher and editor-in-chief, and Jennifer Craig, the magazine’s advertising manager, sent out the following announcement after the July 14 notification from Earnshaw:
“It is with great sadness that we must officially inform you that Footwear Plus has ceased publication. After 15 years, ownership decided abruptly to shutter its doors with the June issue. (The July and August issues were completed in full, but the decision was made not to go forward with printing them.) We, on the staff, deeply regret not fulfilling the expectations and promises made to our loyal advertisers and those featured in our pages, but the decision was not ours to make.
It’s been a great run. Footwear Plus, The Retailers’ Magazine, was an important voice in our industry and brought a fresh approach to what a trade magazine could deliver. Our glossy format and top-notch fashion coverage was unprecedented, and our incisive and in-depth editorial content showcased the leading players and up-and-comers in our dynamic industry in a positive light. In short, Footwear Plus went far beyond simply delivering the news.
Over the years, trends came and went with ever-increasing speed, brands were born and died, and in many ways the business of selling shoes changed dramatically. The one constant: the people who make our industry so amazing. For that, we are truly thankful. It’s been a pleasure working with all of you — your talent, generosity, passion and creativity were a never-ending source of inspiration for us at the magazine.”
