Congratulations to W.L. Gore, Timberland and REI for their sixth consecutive appearance on Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” list! Gore garnered 27th place, Timberland 62nd, and REI 73rd.

Patagonia, which had appeared on the previous five lists, did not make this year’s list, most likely because Fortune changed the qualifying criteria this year, limiting the recognition to companies that had more than 1,000 domestic (U.S.-based) employees. Patagonia has 1,000 employees world-wide; they have less than 1,000 based in the U.S.

SNEWS View: Though Fortune has every right to control how it judges companies, any time the criteria are changed, the readers should know and Fortune dropped the ball by not pointing this out. Limiting the list to those companies with more than 1,000 domestic employees cuts quite a few great companies off at the knees, and that, in our opinion, puts a bit of rust on the list’s shine.
