One of the industry’s most beloved public relations people, Cynthia Amon, is stepping down today after nearly two decades of service. As the long-time public face for the iconic textile manufacturer, Amon was involved in the launch of many innovations during her time at Gore, from Paclite through recent product technologies such as Gore-Tex Surround footwear and Gore-Tex Active garments with permanent beading surface.

“Cynthia has been an outstanding ambassador of the Gore-Tex brand for nearly 20 years,” said Gore associate Steve Shuster, who has worked with Amon throughout her career. “Her passion, dedication and enthusiasm will be missed by her fellow Gore Associates and all those who had the opportunity to work with her in the outdoor industry.”

Her impact on the industry has been significant, and not because of her PR chops. Jon Dorn, Senior Vice President at Active Interest Media and former Editor-in-Chief of Backpacker Magazine, says it best: “From the very first time I met Cynthia at ORSM (maybe 20 years ago!), she has been the epitome of professionalism — responsive, engaged, and always trying to find the right story to share. But more than that, Cynthia has always been a warm, wonderful presence in what can often be a too-cool-for-you industry. Her smile, her positive spirit, her sense of wonder at the amazing places we found ourselves — Alaska, Austria, rain rooms, the list goes on — created a connection that made me want to linger in the Gore booth long after our appointment had officially ended. In her own unassuming way, Cynthia has been every bit the greatest ambassador that Gore has ever had in the outdoor industry.”

Reflecting on her time at Gore, Amon told SNEWS, “I have loved every moment of my 18 plus years working alongside of my fellow Associates as well as journalists, athletes, customers, retailers and nonprofits. The opportunity to engage with, learn from and make friends with amazing, inspiring people both inside and outside of Gore was priceless and took me to incredible places and experiences around the world.”

Amon looks forward to spending more time with her husband of 45 years, her two children and two grandchildren. “Since I have always disliked the word retiring, I prefer to say that I will be re-calibrating while I am still young and in excellent health,” Amon said. “I’m looking forward to embarking on my next adventure in life.”

Amy Calhoun will serve as the media contact in North America on an interim basis until Gore fills the open position of Global Public Relations Associate which will be based in Elkton, MD. Amy can be reached at (302) 292-4663 or acalhoun@wlgore.com.
