Both Vibram and Steere posted the news to their LinkedIn pages this week.
“It is truly humbling to join one of the most iconic outdoors brands in the world,” Steere wrote. “For me, ‘providing confidence on your feet’ [a nod to the brand’s mission statement] is most empowering. Vibram provides confidence to climb challenging terrain and inspires solutions for a more sustainable planet. To be part of a team with this kind of commitment and drive is pretty cool.”
Steere’s most recent role at Timberland was brand lead, which he held from December 2015 to May 2020, when he departed the company. For his last couple of years with the brand, he also served as senior director, global innovation center, for Timberland’s parent company, VF Corporation.
Last June, Steere posted to Instagram that parting ways with Timberland/VF was “bittersweet” but that it was a “privilege to work with people who share the same passion for making a difference and to make it better. To work for a visionary brand that understood early on that a company was only as strong as the community it served. Today, that message has never been so true.”
Steere has plenty of other outdoor cred besides his long tenure at Timberland. He was the inaugural chairperson of Outdoor Foundation and in 2011 received Outdoor Industry Association’s Chairman’s Award for “Extraordinary Service to the Outdoor Industry.” He also has served on the board of Big City Mountaineers for the last three years.
