What are some of the best-selling items in your store and why do you think they’re so popular?

Still probably the biggest sellers are cardio equipment — treadmills, ellipticals, that kind of thing. Also what we see coming on with more popularity is some of the functional training items like TRX straps and dumbbells.

What do you think the biggest issue facing the fitness industry is? And how can we overcome it?

I think really getting back to specialty fitness and what specialty fitness is. It’s not what Sears or JC Penny or Sports Authority carry; it’s what made the specialty fitness specialty in the first place. And that’s service, better product and better experience.

What is the best piece of business advice you’ve ever gotten?

I don’t know if there’s any one specific thing that I can highlight. There are just a lot of different things for a lot of different applications in business.

How do you think fitness retailers can remain profitable in the future?

I would just say become better business people. They need to take a look at all of their profit centers and how they can minimize expenses.

What is your favorite thing about being part of the fitness industry?

Knowing that I’m making a difference.
