You’ve no doubt realized by now your SNEWS® News Update alert emails look a little different. Our goal, as always, is to make your SNEWS® easier to use, and more efficient to read in an age of growing information overload. Since a number of questions and comments have arisen from our SNEWS® subscribers after we moved to the new format, we thought we’d take a moment to clarify what has changed, what it means to you and how you can alter it to fit your needs.

Q: Where’s my Digest? Can I print it?

A: You can you still find your news in one place and print your news in one document. We’ve had a number of subscribers email us wondering what happened to their beloved link to the SNEWS® News Digest for printing in PDF format since the link that had been at the top of the page was not longer there.

While each headline in the News Update email is now a direct link to the story, SNEWS® All Access subscribers (those with full run of the site and news) can still view and print a weekly SNEWS® Digest for reading ease and pleasure each week. Now, however, you’ll find the links to that PDF at the bottom of the Alert.

Simply scroll down and there, clearly labeled, you will find links to the most current Outdoor and Fitness Digests. Of course, SNEWS® All Access subscribers can view the full SNEWS® Digest Archives by clicking on the Digest Archive link visible when you mouse over either the Outdoor or Fitness link in the top or right-hand navigation bar on the SNEWS® website. Or, you can use this link (click here ) to be taken directly to the Digest Archive page where you can select any one of the outdoor or fitness Digests that have been created since November of 2002 – that’s a lot of history and more than enough bedtime reading for anyone we suspect.

SNEWS® Freebie subscribers (those with limited access) don’t get a Digest to print at all, which is a bummer, we know. For you Freebie folks, you will need to read your SNEWS® online only as you can’t print from the site at all. And, you’ll need to stay current since you can only access articles that are less than seven days old, reason enough to opt for receiving your email News Alerts on a daily basis. That way, you see articles when they are posted, and have seven days to read, think about and, if you choose, chime in on an article chat discussion.

Q: Why can’t I see more than headlines in my SNEWS® News Update email alert?

A: If we blew one thing in our March 10 launch of the new email alert service, it was that we didn’t realize a one-line headline does not sufficiently describe what is in the story – which is compounded by that headline being one of many in a long string of headlines causing eyes to spin, your heads to be pounded on desks, and Blackberries to be hurled across rooms. OK, no Blackberries died, but still…. Our bad and our IT team moved quickly to correct that oversight. Now, you will see story summaries with every headline in your SNEWS® News Update by default. If you want to turn off the story summaries and see only headlines again, you can do that too – just go to Manage Account and the Update Email Preferences page and uncheck the box “Include SummariesWith Headlines.”

Q: Can I still choose between outdoor and fitness headlines in my email alert?

A: Yes, of course. This IS SNEWS® your way.The old style of sending either or both an Outdoor SNEWS® News Digest and a Fitness SNEWS® News Digest has been ended. Part of the reason was to bring to an end the continued confusion by folks thinking they were getting two of the same email. Another reason was to eliminate the number of emails on the same day our readers were coping with. The default with the new SNEWS® News Update email service is to provide outdoor and fitness headlines together in one package. With the story summaries, it will be easy to decide which stories are of immediate interest and which aren’t. Many stories are actually of interest to both audiences.

However, if you want to trim down further the number of headlines you see in each email, you can go to Manage Account and the Update Email Preferences page and check or uncheck the boxes for Fitness, Outdoor or Law Review. If you leave a box unchecked, you will not receive the headlines from that industry segment. SNEWS® group and corporate subscribers, and those individual SNEWS® All Access subscribers who purchased a package subscription will still receive separate Law Review News Update headline alert emails as long as the Law Review box remains checked.

SNEWS® Freebie subscribers don’t have to think about this step, as they can only see the industry headlines from either Outdoor or Fitness — depending on what segment was selected when the subscription was activated. If it’s more information you wish to see, we’d recommend upgrading to a SNEWS® All Access subscription by clicking here: www.outsidebusinessjournal.com/subscribe.

Q: Can I still decide how often and when I want to get my SNEWS® News Update email alerts?

A: Yes, as of March 10, subscribers can choose how often they receive a SNEWS® News Update headline email alert from us. They are sent in the evening, at the end of the day. So you can choose every day, every other day, only on Monday and Friday, only on Friday, just on Tuesday and Thursday, or on whatever days desired. Your choice. We would recommend opting for Monday, Wednesday and Friday (evenings), but that’s up to you of course. More frequency means fewer headlines to wade through in each email you receive.

The default for everyone will be Monday, as it is now, sent as usual at the end of the day. To choose the days you wish to receive your SNEWS® alert emails, simply go to Manage Account, listed at the top of every page in SNEWS®. Once on the Manage Account page, select Update Email Preferences and make your choice for delivery days. Or, just click here to be taken directly to the Update Email Preferences page.
