What did the SNEWS team read this week that other fitness insiders might find interesting? Read on to find out.
- Last week, one of our SNEWS Reads was about a study that supposedly showed exercise was not helpful for people with depression. This Medical News Today story said the “media friendly” results were misleading because the researchers never intended to test the effect of exercise on depression. The results of the study merely suggested that while many people believe exercise helps those with depression, further studies are needed.
- Fitness is something people say they don’t have a lot of time for. The Guardian isn’t buying it. If you have five minutes a day to engage in some high interval training, this article said, you can get fit. Apparently, a small amount of time spent on interval training is as effective as jogging at a leisurely pace for a longer period. Hm … perhaps we’ll try some of this interval training and sleep in tomorrow morning …
- We’re a supersized nation these days, and though some locales are trying to combat it (we’re sure you’ve heard of New York’s attempt to ban supersize drinks), out-of-control portions are common. Often, when we buy a can of iced tea at the grocery store, we look and think 70 calories isn’t too bad, but then we look again and realize that can has three servings. This Women’s Health Magazine article discusses which of your favorite foods are the biggest violators.
- Trying to practice sustainability ourselves, we were intrigued by the equipment we’ve seen at trade shows that supposedly turns fitness buffs into work horses that convert power back into the grid. Turns out, according to this Club Industry story, the feelings among club owners are mixed. Some are nixing the green equipment from their line-up, while others are embracing it.
- We don’t know about a study outlined in Forbes magazine that linked exercise to higher pay. If this were truly the case we’d be millionaires! In any case, check out the article that showed regular exercisers earn 9 percent more than their sedentary counterparts.
- Uh-oh. We are in trouble according to this Times of India article that stated if your exercise of choice strengthens primarily your lower body, you are not doing a good job of maintaining your overall health, which requires upper body workouts too. The article recommends exercising the shoulders, back and arms to improve posture and avoid injuries.
- We know from experience that being overweight and going to a gym isn’t a very comfortable experience, but in Vancouver, Canada, there’s a fitness company specifically for plus-size women. The idea behind the Body Exchange, according to this Province article, is to provide thicker ladies a comfy place to get fit.
- Remember in the original Karate Kid when Daniel LaRusso visited the Cobra Kai Dojo after getting beat up at a beach party? He spots the boys who beat him up, as the whole class is chanting, “Strike first, strike hard, no mercy, sir!” This seems to be the motto against fat these days with intense workouts like CrossFit and P90X. Check out this Dispatch article that describes both and identifies which ones are best for you.
- Kettlebells have been all the rage for the last few years, but how much more effective are workouts with them versus workouts with other free weights? This Globe and Mail story summarizes a pair of studies published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research that show positive results for kettlebell enthusiasts, but also show that it’s not a good thing to try to squeeze too many benefits from one single workout.
- If we’re being honest here, dining out in restaurants scares the begeezus out of us, so needless to say we agree with these fitness buffs in Canada who are demanding calorie counts on restaurant menus. Check out this CBC News story.
