What did the SNEWS team read this week that other fitness insiders might find interesting? Well, read on to find out.
- We’ve heard about study after study that shows exercise is effective at preventing diseases like diabetes and in some cases even warding off cancer, but in some cases even the healthiest people can’t avoid cancer. But even in those cases, the Center for Advancing Health declared in this study abstract, exercise can help ease the excessive fatigue those with cancer experience during treatments.
- We’ve also heard about studies that suggest exercising outdoors produces positive psychological effects, but those positive effects can be transferred to your customer’s indoor workouts by simply having the color green in their environment. This article suggests that the color green boosts the positive effects of exercise
- So given that the color green boosts the positive effects of exercise, it’s no surprise that the creators of indoor workout spaces want to incorporate some stellar views of nature into their planning. Check out this Huffington Post story about the top 12 hotel fitness center views. Our favorite was the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego.
- Given what we saw at Health and Fitness Business Expo and Club Industry, we know the trend of incorporating alpps into fitness equipment is all the rage these days. Check out this Modesto Bee article that suggests apps for health and fitness in general is gaining popularity. Apps like MapMyRun or My Fitness Pal are widely used by people who want to get and stay healthy.
- Speaking of technology and fitness, check out this ABC News story about a new fitness gadget called Misfit Shine, which is a wearable fitness tracker made from metal and launched by a company founded by Apple co-founder John Sculley. Sculley said the look and feel of the product makes it so you could wear it anywhere and it won’t look like out of place. A misfit that fits in, in other words.
- Yesterday kicked off a season that at the end of which our clothes fit a bit tighter. But that doesn’t have to be the case, according to this article. Not if you incorporate physical activity in between the cookies and turkeys. This could be a great selling point for you, retailers, as people need a bit of extra motivation to get moving during this time of year. If you’re sponsoring a Jingle Jog or some other type of fun run or activity, promote it to get new customers. Or you could always just play on their fears of gaining weight – and sell them something green. Refer to SNEWS Read item No. 1.
- We women need to start listening to Sally Field when she is trying to school us about osteoporosis, and if your customers don’t listen to her, maybe they’ll listen to you when you tell them about this information you got from this Tahoe Daily Tribune story. Turns out lifting weights promotes healthy bones. Get those kettlebells ready for sale folks.
- This time of year people are storing up all that motivation for their New Year’s Resolutions, but encourage your baby boomer customers to take it slowly. Not only will this help them stick to any new exercise routines, it will also help prevent injuries to muscles and joints, according to this story.
- This is a truly inspirational story about a coach who, according was pronounced dead as a 2-year-old with pneumonia. He miraculously came back to life but wasn’t very strong during his formative years, and still didn’t run or exercise much until he became a physical education teacher and coach. Soon, on his 56th birthday, he will run his 56th marathon. By the way, he’s on his third lap around the equator.
- Exercise seems to have become a bad word, associated with pain and suffering. It’s crazy that people no longer see any form of movement as exercise. But one fitness guru in Ohio is aiming to change that mentality by having parents and children engaging in fun games and promote movement over exercise.
