What did the SNEWS team learn this week that other outdoor industry insiders might find interesting? Well, read on to find out.
- SNEWS brought you the news that Outdoor Retailer is looking for a different host city, other than Salt Lake City, but we are fans of reading all kinds of things (that is, after all, why we have this column), so check out Utah Policy’s take on the story.
- This Dudes with Tents blog post has all the reasons you need to give your non-outdoorsy friends who seem to always say, “I could never do that,” when you are retelling your adventures. Help transform those weekend warriors who spend their time with questionable men and women at the bars, to the kind of weekend warrior who spends their weekends with gorgeous sunsets and questionable insects.
- This KSAZ Fox affiliate story previews a workshop that will teach us all how to be “Bear Aware When Camping” this coming summer. The workshop is presented by the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center, based in Scottsdale Arizona. For more information on the April 28 workshop, visit www.southwestwildlife.org.
- Good news for you Missouri retailers! Apparently your state is the No. 1 state for camping in the country according to About.com (and reported in this Kearney Courier story). But Montana and SNEWS’ beloved Colorado came in a close second and third respectively.
- SNEWS recently reported on the rise of the adventure tourism industry, and this release posted on Seattle Pi’s website gives us more information to support that fact. A Tibet travel agency called Explore Tibet Team is introducing a new camping trip to Yamdrok Lake that encompasses all the spirit of adventure travel.
- We all love our gadgets, and there’s a way to “keep it geeky” while bonding with nature, according to this Digital Trends story, which points out all the different gadgets we could stow in our backpack for a super tech- and nature-loving experience.
- SNEWS loves feature stories about outdoor retailers, and we loved this Ashville Citizen-Times story about Take a Hike Outfitters owned by John McFerrin. This great article gives McFerrin’s and the shop’s histories.
- People in our industry are doing awesome things all the time, and Drew Brohead is taking his turn. This Harbor Light News article gives the run down of Brohead’s venture to raise money for the Fresno County Office of Education’s teacher grant program by climbing the longest route of Yosemite’s El Capitan.
- We all hope we’re still kickin’ it Boulder style (translation: like awesome people) when we’re grandmothers and grandfathers. Check out this Expand Outdoors blog post that includes a video featuring ladies who are still ultrarunning well into their 60s and 70s. And what makes it even cooler? Some of these people didn’t start running until they were in their 40s.
- Besides the several-hour trek up to the Gunks or Adirondaks, Central Park is as close to the wild that New Yorkers can get, and turns out they’re making the most of it. Central Park is the site for classes of the Mountain Scout Survival School that teaches students to be aware of their surrounds while in the woods. Check out this New York Times story on the program.
