What did the SNEWS team read this week that other industry insiders might find interesting? Well, read on to find out.

• We love stories about hard-core adventures, like this one in the Guardian about Felicity Aston, who skied solo across Antarctica. This story takes you inside her journey, from the moment she was dropped off and having a panic attack, to the moment she finished. Amazing. 

• With Interbike wrapping up soon, this Guardian bike blog post about the best everyday bike wear got us motivated to mosey on up from the Health & Fitness Business Expo to the Interbike show floor to see what’s new in the bike world, including apparel, to see if the Guardian missed anything.

• Between the Hanta Virus and more cases of West Nile Virus, this Blisstree post about four new tick borne diseases was not welcome at all. Turns out now your customers and other outdoor adventurers need to worry about these new strains of diseases that originate with ticks. Stock up on things like Craghopper’s NosiLife or ExOfficio’s BugsAway collections; and perhaps sell some Sawyer repellent to have your customers treat their own clothing and gear.

• We are constantly reminded to beware of suspicious activity at airports, but this Walworth County Today story urges outdoor enthusiasts to be on the lookout for suspicious behavior in the outdoors as well. The tips don’t involve reporting unattended baggage, but adventurers are encouraged to watch out for other shady behavior.

• We had the pleasure of chatting with Teresa Delfin, founder of Mountain Mama, an activewear company for pregnant women, for the O.R.D. this past summer, so we were happy to see she’s getting even more press (not that she’s a stranger to press, she has been on national television recently) in this Discovery article

• We love to help out awesome organizations, as exemplified by our attempt to raise funds for First Descents by running the New York City Marathon in a few months, and our volunteering for Big City Mountaineers, so we were tickled by this Force Change post calling for signatures to honor outdoor enthusiasts who climb to raise money for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. • Congratulations Carhartt! This Herald Online story reports the company was recently honored with the Legends of Outdoors Manufacturing Excellence Award. The company has been manufacturing work wear since 1889. The award is given to companies that have been in business for more than 50 years.

• Did your pup fall out of shape some how? That might be a hard feat for dogs of outdoor enthusiasts but in case that happened, this story has tips on how to get your doggie back into tip top shape.

• Right in our backyard, conservation and outdoor leaders are meeting as part of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership to discuss the future of conservation and the Endangered Species Act. Check out this KJCT 8 story for more information.

• It seems there can never be enough amazing organizations exposing people to the wonders of the outdoors. This Cache Valley Daily story features Common Ground Outdoor Adventures, which is said to bring joy and happiness to those with disabilities through outdoor adventures.
