Boardworks SUP Cross Returns to Utah’s Weber River

Encinitas, Calif. (May 9, 2012) – Boardworks SUP is pleased to announce the return of the Boardworks Show Up & Blow Up SUP Cross, a super fun, high octane, fast and furious technical race down Utah’s Weber River.

This exciting river event brings together top SUP racers and the West’s best river paddlers for a few hours of fun and mayhem. The SUP cross event will take place Tuesday, July 31 at Taggart Falls, a well known whitewater section on the Weber River, located within the Wasatch Mountain range.

Designed for high-spirited paddlers, the SUP cross races will be run on a demanding quarter-mile technical course. Racers will be required to hit gates and make difficult turn buoys before crossing the finish line just beyond Taggart Falls.

“Last year this event was a big surprise for me,” says elite SUP racer Slater Trout. “Most SUP events have become so serious. However, at last year’s event, we had athletes from all types of waterways including rivers, ocean and lakes. The competition was fierce but friendly and required some skills I had to acquire on the spot”. Slater also added “This is the one event of the year that is pure fun. Don’t miss it.”

The specialized SUP cross course will test the technical skills of paddlers. Racers will run in heats of four competitors with the winning two racers advancing to the next round. The event also includes repechage heats allowing racers who are knocked out early to have another chance of advancing through the competition. The course is subject to change depending on Weber River conditions and water levels.

In the spirit of neutrality, the Boardworks Show Up & Blow Up SUP Cross will be a “single design contest” with the organizers providing Badfish MCIT Stand Up Paddleboards to all competitors. The innovative inflatable Badfish SUP boards are specifically designed for challenging river conditions and are super fun to ride on fast moving water.

The event is limited to 80 competitors and each registered entrant will be required to validate their paddling experience and knowledge before competing. Boardworks SUP will provide safety equipment (helmets & PFD’s) to all racers. Entrants will receive a cool event T-shirt, lunch and a Boardworks SUP racer’s kit full of sponsor samples.

Awards and Prizes
Event winners (male & female) win a full river SUP kit including the remarkable Badfish inflatable SUP board, river personal floatation device (PFD), WRSI Whitewater Helmet, Boardworks adjustable Dynel Paddle and a new Badfish River SUP Leash. Second, third and fourth place finishers to receive special awards from Boardworks and event sponsors.

Age Group & Craft Categories
Open to men and women (no age groups). Single design only, Boardworks SUP will provide all competitors with Badfish inflatable SUP boards.

Rules & Courses

Mandatory Safety
All entrants must have previous whitewater river experience. PFD (personal floatation device), helmet and footwear are mandatory. Boardworks SUP will provide safety equipment (helmets & PFD’s) to all participants. It is advised that competitors bring additional protective wear for knees, shins and elbows.
