After nearly a year of beginning and ending various partnerships, Resist-a-Ball has teamed up internationally with Mad Dogg Athletics as an educational partner and Power Systems for distribution, sourcing and manufacturing.
“We parallel each other,” said Mike Morris, founder of Resist-a-Ball. “The ball and cycling go hand-in-hand.”
The agreement was finalized this month after Resist-a-Ball’s former partner, Body Masters, filed bankruptcy in early January about two months after giving Morris notice of termination of their contract that had only been in place since early 2004 (see SNEWSÂ® story, Jan. 17, 2005, “Body Masters quietly files for Ch. 11 reorganization”).
This marriage and divorce came just a few months after Resist-a-Ball (www.resistaball.com) and Spri Products had terminated their 15-year licensing agreement after six years, with each party moving forward with stability balls and education separately (see SNEWSÂ® story, April 22, 2004, “Resist-A-Ball, Spri end licensing agreement”).
The Body Masters partnership had initially seemed like the perfect choice for Morris, who had moved to Louisiana, where he comes from, to be near Body Masters in Rayne, La. Morris will remain there with his family, including wife, Resist-a-Ball choreographer and co-founder Stephanie Morris.
Both Morris and John Baudhuin, president and CEO of Mad Dogg, which created and oversees the education and certification for the Spinning indoor-cycling program, say the strategic partnership will allow the two companies to tap into the strengths of each other, possibly offering certifications for both programs at the same time.
“By leveraging the infrastructure that we’ve created with the Spinning program over the past 13 years, we’re well-positioned to develop other types of programming that will improve the level of education in the category,” Baudhuin said.
Power Systems will work the product side, using its sourcing to be the exclusive manufacturer of Resist-a-Ball products, as well as warehouse and distribute the products, although not exclusively in the United States. Mad Dog has rights outside the country.
“We can now market and distribute Resist-A-Ball products and education globally, whereas in the past we didn’t have the product distribution or administrative infrastructure in place to do so on an international level,” Morris said. “Our programs complement each other and we are targeting the same customers. It makes it much easier for a fitness facility to deal with one company to train their staff on these two specialty-training programs.”
All three remain separate, privately-held companies.
