Founded with and by SGMA in 2001, Sports Edge magazine has been spun-off, with the association under President Tom Cove’s leadership selling the publication to its publisher, Sporting Kid Publishing LLC.
According to an SGMA announcement, the goal is to focus more on issues, advocacy and timely reporting.
â€œThe industry is already well covered by a few leading publications,” Cove said. “Through our new programs, SGMA’s communicationsÂ will beÂ much more targeted and meaningful to our members.”
Sporting Kid/Sports Edge publisher Tina D’Aversa-Williams told SNEWSÂ® that the magazine will continue as an independent publication without a change in editorial format, with the intent to publish monthly in 2006, and to continue to cover the broader sporting goods industry.
“There have been many changes at SGMA International and many of these changes the last six months,” D’Aversa-Williams said. “Even though the editorial format as a voice of the sporting goods industry will not change, we will not be the official publication of SGMA International.”
SGMA will launch an electronic executive brief on sgma.com designed to highlight more in-depth content.Â The association said Cove’s new plan will emphasize flexibility, timeliness, and urgency, includingÂ issue alerts, legislative updates,Â and a new grassroots lobbying program to promote memberÂ action on critical policy changes.
“We wantÂ to reach out to members on our areas of expertise, such as legislative policy, market research, international affairs, and industry relations,” Cove said. “Our members needÂ timely reporting on the issues we deal with daily, from China quotas to product liability to national sports governing body rulings. An SGMA executive brief willÂ deliver relevant news and information — and encourage our members to engage with us.”
The sale was announced in late August, although the transfer of all ownership and trademark rights was completed as of July 2005.
