Many of you have been asking for it, and SNEWS® is delivering — RSS feed capability for all of our content is now live. Now, you can be in the know about industry events, news, stories and more, as soon as the story goes live, rather than having to remember to log in, or waiting for the weekly SNEWS® News Digest.

What is RSS you ask? RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an easy way to view and read the SNEWS® and Law Review content you want whenever it is updated even if you are not on SNEWSnet.com. SNEWS® provides continually updated headline feeds from all the top sections and delivers them directly to your desktop news reader.

What makes RSS so cool? Bottom line is you become connected, almost like being in the SNEWS® offices, but you get to choose how much and how often you want to receive your updates. You are in the driver’s seat.

Activating RSS feeds is easy. If you Yahoo, we have a button you can use to add SNEWS® content to your personal Yahoo page. Or, you can install a free news reader that displays RSS feeds from the websites you select. And RSS reader (also known as an aggregator) works rather like an email program or a web browser, serving as a kind of information portal, providing a real-time interface to the feeds you select — not just those from SNEWS® if you choose. Once the RSS reader is set up to access the pages in SNEWSnet.com you want, it will continually poll the SNEWSnet.com RSS feeds for the latest headlines and stories. The reader works in the background or out of sight in the toolbar if you want, and when a story is posted, an alert message will pop up. It’s all very easy, and all very customizable.

A number of free and commercial news readers are available for download. There are many to choose from. Here at SNEWS®, we like both RssReader (http://allrss.com/rssreaders.html) and FeedReader (http://www.feedreader.com/) — both are for Windows-based platforms only. Apple computer users can utilize Safari’s own built-in RSS reader.

After installing the news reader, you can add each news feed manually from the SNEWS® RSS feed landing page by right clicking on the “RSS” orange button next to the feed you choose — and then selecting “Copy Shortcut.”

To add a news feed, you will simply open up your RSS reader and follow the directions to add a news feed. For example in RssReader, you start RssReader and go to add(+) channel/feed and then paste (click right mouse button) the URL and press OK. Add as many feeds to your RSS reader as you want.

SNEWS® currently offer RSS feeds as follows:

  1. All SNEWS® Content — select this and our site will deliver all the content from outdoor, fitness, Merchandising Hub, Training Center, Podcasts, Press Releases and Law Review to your reader in one feed.
  2. All SNEWS® Headlines — select this and you will receive only outdoor and fitness SNEWS® headlines and no other content.
  3. SNEWS® Outdoor Headlines — select this and you will receive only outdoor SNEWS® headlines and no other content.
  4. SNEWS® Fitness Headlines — select this and you will receive only fitness SNEWS® headlines and no other content.

Our recommendation would be to create separate files in your RSS Reader and then add a selection of content feeds from the above list, rather than opting for “All SNEWS® Content,” but the call is yours. Like we said, you are now connected to your industries like never before — and connected your way.
