SNEWS® Live: There’s a lot of buzz about bamboo. The clamoring over its use in manufacturing sustainable products is getting louder of late. The tall, fast growing cane plant is being used for everything from wood flooring to fashionable fabrics for green garments. But in the wild and as an industrial crop, bamboo is increasingly in short supply. Grown primarily in parts of Asia, this highly sought material is being harvested at escalating rates.

At Outdoor Retailer Summer Market 2008, SNEWS® Live connected with Jackie Heinricher. She’s developing a plan to create a new supply of bamboo to meet demand. Her company called Boo-Shoots aims to apply a bit of science to increase bamboo yields not only in Asia, but around the world.
