SNEWS® Live: Climbers, rockers and cancer survivors plan trek to Everest base camp for first-ever acoustic concert

SNEWS® Live: Mike Peters is the lead singer for the ’80s rock band the Alarm. With songs like “68 Guns,” “Marching On” and “Love Don’t Come Easy,” the band with Peters riding herd has scaled the pop charts for the past three decades. Today, he’s 47 and plans to climb to new heights. Though still singing, Peters now leads a band of a different type, a group of 40 musicians, climbers and cancer survivors heading for the base of Mount Everest.
Peters was diagnosed last year with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. While struggling against the disease that may one day claim his life, he hopes to inspire others to join the fight by raising awareness and money to find a cure.
Pulling together friends and colleagues in the music business, Peters co-founded the Love Hope Strength Foundation, which raises funds and awareness for international cancer centers and networks through music-related events and promotions. Recruiting musicians and mountaineers from across the United States and the United Kingdom, he aims to put on the first-ever acoustic rock concert from the Everest base camp. Other cancer survivors are coming along on the mid-October trek to celebrate their triumph over this tragic illness in an event organizers call “Everest Rocks.”
