Last week, we called out SNEWS staffers’ top 10 sock brands, with fit, construction, wear and materials critiques to back it up. Point6 took the No. 1 spot in our hearts — but you, dear readers, are never ones to follow the crowd.
Topping the heap in our SNEWS Reader Sock Poll was Dahlgren, with 25 percent of the vote. Darn Tough Vermont took silver with 14 percent of the vote. In a close third place was Fits Sock Co., with 12 percent of the vote.
A few die-hard fans wrote in candidates — and we’ll be sure to test these brands we haven’t tried previously to see how they stack up. Those dark-horse companies? Tennessee-based Swiftwick and North Carolina-based Feetures! Performance Socks.
“You’re missing the best brand out there FEETURES,” wrote SNEWS Fan Gina Tarantino, emphasizing her favorite brand in all caps.
Our Facebook fan page and our interactions on Twitter were both busy this last week, with brands Tweeting to call on their followers to vote for them. The Twitter feeds of industry public relations specialists like Jam Media Collective (which represents Keen) and Outside PR’s Gordon Wright and Jenny Radloff (who represent Injinji), were full of such requests.
“Can’t live without #injinji? Shout it from the rooftops! Vote for us in @SNEWSteam Great Sock Survey,” Injinji tweeted last week.
“We need your #VOTES in the Great #Sock Survey from @SNEWSteam!” Wigwam tweeted.
Even in the final hours of the contest, polls for which closed yesterday at noon Mountain time, brands were soliciting those last-minute votes.
“The @SNEWSteam Sock Survey is in its last hours: Polls close at 2pm EST/11am PST. Vote for Dahlgren NOW!!” Dahlgren tweeted.
All their work paid off. We received a whopping 500 votes. Here’s a breakdown of how those votes were distributed:
- Dahlgren – 25 percent
- Darn Tough Vermont – 14 percent
- Fits Sock Co. – 12 percent
- Fox River – 9 percent
- Icebreaker – 8 percent
- Injinji – 7 percent
- SmartWool – 5 percent
- Wigwam, Keen and Point6 all with 4 percent
The rest of the votes were scattered (1 to 2 percent each) among the following: ToeSox, Woolrich, Farm to Feet Bridgedale and Columbia.
