Sometimes the smallest items are the must-have’s and can’t-do-withouts in your exercise artillery. Take this door attachment from Spri. It’s a short and simple strip of heavy duty woven nylon cord. But with this and an exercise tube (sold separately) and you nearly have an entire home gym.

Plus, this little ditty is so lightweight you can put it in a pocket, purse or suitcase and it only costs four bucks.

What’s not to like?

Basically, it’s a doubled-over length of strap so one end of the 8-inch length is a loop, while the other end is stitched firmly shut and has a thick plug in it. Open a door, stick the strap in the back so the loop is facing you and close the door firmly so the thick part is behind the door and therefore keeps it from coming out. Loop a rubber tube through the loop and, depending on the height of the tube and whether you face it and the door, face away from it, put your side to it, crouch, kneel or sit, you can do any number of exercises, pretty much hitting up your entire body. Chest presses? No problem, put your back to the door. Rows? No problem, sit on the floor or stand and pull back. Tricips? Gotcha covered. Fact the door and bend and extend your elbow. The list goes on and on.

Our editor recently took the attachment and one tube on a three-week trip and found she didn’t have to leave behind her toning and strengthening routine. All you need is a door that shuts firmly (emphasis on FIRMLY so you don’t pull on the tube and fall over!) and you’re on your way.

One advantage is how thin the strap is and that the slightly thicker plug end is still small – it keeps the piece light and transportable. We’d be even more comfortable if the thicker end was a bit thicker to keep it firmly plugged in all doors. Also, the free two-page instruction chart only lists six exercises, barely scratching the surface of the range you can do, although it explains those six fairly well. An accompanying DVD would be nice to better explain the endless list of things you can do.

For this price and this size, however, it should be in everyone’s closet of gear for quick home workouts, regular all-over toning, or for routines while on-the-go.
