A new column examining gender bias and its impact within the outdoor industry
Alison Hill is the managing director for LifeStraw one of two major humanitarian enterprises within Vestergaard, a global company dedicated to improving the health of vulnerable populations around the world. Operating with a core belief that safe water is a human right, LifeStraw designs innovative and award-winning water filtration technology housed within individual straws through high-volume water storage tanks, supporting communities, household and individual use.
In addition to leading LifeStraw, Hill also oversees programs implemented with government Ministries of Health to integrate safe water with other public health initiatives including HIV voluntary testing and malaria prevention. In 2011, Hill managed the development and implementation of the first carbon-financed safe drinking water program, a project that provided more than 4.5 million people in Western Kenya with access to safe water. Hill received her MPH and MBA from Johns Hopkins University and has lived and worked extensively in Africa over the last 12 years.
