Cascade Designs taps Jim Osgood to lead key region

The parent company of Therm-a-Rest, MSR, and other outdoor brands has appointed the industry veteran as president of its North America and Pacific Rim (N.A.P.R.) region.

Outdoor industry veteran Jim Osgood has been tapped to lead a key region for Seattle-based Cascade Designs, the parent company of Therm-a-Rest, MSR, Platypus, SealLine, PackTowl, and Varilite.

Osgood brings more than 30 years of experience to his new role as president of the company’s North America and Pacific Rim (N.A.P.R.) region. His appointment is effective March 29.

“His wealth of career knowledge and experience across a range of industries will enable him to offer a diverse and nuanced perspective to help support and grow Cascade Designs presence in the N.A.P.R markets,” said James Cotter, CEO of Cascade Designs. “With a focus on made-in-market manufacturing and a pursuit of excellent service, we see Jim building on the strengths of the Cascade Designs brands and people. We feel very fortunate to work with him and anticipate a seamless transition into the role.”

Added Osgood: “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with such a talented team and passion-driven brands. I’ve long admired Cascade Designs’ ethos and history, and I’m proud to now help maintain its status as an industry leader in designing thoughtfully engineered outdoor equipment,” said Osgood.

Osgood most recently served as chairman, president, and CEO of Klean Kanteen, the Chico, California-based insulated bottle brand that the outdoor industry rallied around when tragedy struck its community a few years ago.

In November 2018, Osgood—like many others—had to leave Outdoor Retailer Winter Market in Denver on a moment’s notice and fly home to California because the newly ignited Camp Fire was threatening the area around Klean Kanteen’s Chico headquarters.

While the fire never made it to the brand’s building, more than a dozen employees lost their homes, and many in the community were impacted by the blaze. Osgood oversaw Klean Kanteen’s production of a special edition #ButteStrong insulated bottle, whose proceeds benefited those who lost homes in the fire. Other outdoor brands also chipped in to help Klean Kanteen’s hometown.

Osgood also serves on the board of directors and executive committee for 1% for the Planet, the nonprofit whose members donate 1% of their annual sales to support a variety of environmental causes.

Osgood and his family still live in Chico, but he will now split time between Cascade’s offices in Seattle and Reno, Nevada.
