SNEWS® Live: Joining the South Yuba River Citizens League to clean up the Yuba
On Saturday, September 15, 2007, the South Yuba River Citizens League in Nevada City, California brought together over 400 volunteers to comb the Yuba river watershed and its trails for debris. SNEWS® Live followed a small group of volunteers working cleanup patrol on the Independence Trail in Nevada City.

SNEWS® Live: The Yuba River in the western Sierra Nevada attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year with its massive granite ledges, steep canyons and clear blue water.
But hikers making their way to their favorite swimming holes on the Wild and Scenic river also come across the not-so-scenic: discarded mattresses, refrigerators and other trash left behind by locals who mistake the rugged outdoors for a dumping ground.
On Saturday, September 15, 2007, the South Yuba River Citizens League in Nevada City, California brought together over 400 volunteers to comb the watershed and its trails for debris.
Called the “Great Yuba Cleanup,” it was just one of hundreds of similar cleanups taking place throughout the state of California that day. This year, the California Coastal commission estimates that approximately 50,000 volunteers participating in California Coastal Cleanup Day collected 800,000 pounds of trash.
