Throughout the month of June, we’re highlighting organizations and initiatives that advocate for greater outdoor access among the LGBTQ+ community. Today’s feature is OUTVentures, a group for queer outdoor enthusiasts that has been around for almost three decades.
Started by Ed Ferguson in 1994 to meet a need for adventure programming unique to queer outdoor folx, OUTVentures is one of the pioneers in the LGBTQ+ outdoor world.
Its mission is to “promote a positive attitude, exemplary values, service, health, and social equality through outdoor recreation.” By creating a safe space for like-minded and queer-identifying enthusiasts, OUTVentures hopes to inspire people to set out into the wild world as their authentic selves.
With trips ranging across the Pacific Northwest, OUTVentures leads everything from day hikes to camping trips to whitewater rafting. The adventures are free or low-cost to members.
