SNEWS® Live: Most sports fans are well-versed in two types of sports narratives — the thrill of victory and agony of defeat. Writer Steve Friedman has come up with a third take on the sports story, The Agony of Victory. That’s the title of Friedman’s new book by Arcade Publishing. In 14 stories, Friedman delves into the inner lives of some of the world’s top athletes in pursuits such as hiking, running and extreme sports.
Friedman is a former editor at GQ Magazine and Esquire magazine. Besides authoring three books, his work has appeared numerous times in the anthology, “The Best American Sports Writing.”
Using detailed narration that recreates some of the greatest moments in sports history never seen on television, Friedman gets into the minds of athletes whose drive to win is fueled not by a love of their sport, but by a deep need to prove themselves.
