Arc’teryx is restructuring its management team after its CEO Tyler Jordan stepped down last week, along with several other high-level departures within the past few months.
The Canadian outdoor brand’s parent company Amer Sports named Vincent Wauters as its new general manager for Arc’teryx to replace Jordan, who had served as president and CEO of the brand for the past seven years.
Wauters, who had been Amer’s supply chain and IT senior vice president, “will develop Arc’teryx in line with Amer Sports’ strategy to grow faster in softgoods, leveraging scale and synergies and driving the Group’s integration,” company officials said. Wauters will report to Andy Towne, president of Amer Sports’ Apparel.
Finland-based Amer Sports is a publicly traded company which purchased Arc’teryx along with Salomon from Adidas in 2005. Amer also owns the Atomic, Suunto, Wilson and Precor brands.
Jordan told SNEWS he left on his own volition, giving notice to Arc’teryx in May, with his last day being June 8. He declined to go into detail about his departure, but said after 19 years with the brand, it was time to move on.
“I have a lot of ideas, and there’s been interest from several of those in the outdoor industry, but for now I’m going to take a decompression period and figure out the best path forward.”
Jordan was Arc’teryx’s fourth office employee, joining the brand, which was then called Rock Solid Manufacturing, in 1993 as an administrator and bookkeeper. He worked his way up through operational roles in purchasing, factory management and accounting before serving in the executive roles as vice president of finance, administration and manufacturing, then senior vice president. In 2005, shortly before former parent company, Adidas, sold the brand to Amer Sports, Jordan was named president and CEO.
Jordan isn’t the only Arc’teryx executive to recently leave the company.
Arc’teryx Director of International Sales John Irvine left earlier this year to take a position as head of public relations and special events at Mountain Equipment Co-op. In April, Vice President of Sales George Curleigh left the brand to become the new vice president and head of Vasque footwear. Others, such as Babe Carel, director of customer relationship management, and Reto Tischhauser, European brand manger, also recently left Arc’teryx,
Arc’teryx Director of Brand Marketing Tom Duguid told SNEWS the changes come as the brand grows rapidly, some positions are restructured and some of its executives took jobs elsewhere.
“It’s both a good and bad thing for Arc’teryx,” Duguid said. “On one hand, we lose people like Tyler, who really fostered the culture at Arc’teryx that led to the growth, on the other hand, we get the opportunity to make these strategic moves to stay on top of the growth.”
