Colorado Outward Bound School (COBS) and the Pacific Crest Outward Bound School (PCOBS) have announced they will merge on Jan. 1, 2003 to become one bigger, stronger organization named Outward Bound West. Outward Bound West’s headquarters will be Golden, Col., at the COBS current new facility, located in the American Mountaineering Center. Craig Trames, executive director of PCOBS, told SNEWS®, “This is the best thing for both schools and for Outward Bound and is something I have been driving for some time. I will continue to work with OB through the transition and intend to remain with OB for the long term, but the exact capacity still has to be determined.” Bruce Fitch, the current executive director for COBS, will be the new director of Outward Bound West. SNEWS® View: This is a strong and proactive move by Outward Bound. With five schools and basically five of everything nationwide, the consolidation of two of the programs will allow OB to leverage resources and plow more money into course development and experimentation as well as much needed instructor training and retention programs. Our money is on Trames remaining with OB as a board member as well as working with the organization of innovating future programs and direction.
