Mikal Belicove of the American Camping Association shared the following with SNEWS® today: “A great friend and supporter of all things outdoor industry-related passed away yesterday morning (Wednesday, April 24). David Webb, long-time director of Brigham Young University’s (BYU) Outdoor Unlimited program, died yesterday morning as the result of injuries received in a terrible automobile accident in Utah. (According to reports, David was traveling eastbound on SR-6 through Spanish Fork Canyon at about 8:10 a.m. when he drifted into the westbound lane of traffic, striking a semi head-on. Authorities say that it may be possible that David fell asleep at the wheel.) David’s sense of history and desire to see more professionalism in the College & University outdoor recreation community propelled him in many directions. He was extremely active in the formation and leadership of the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education (AORE) and its International Conference on Outdoor Recreation & Education (ICORE). In fact, David was a member of AORE’s Board of Directors at the time of his death. He also single-handedly published the ‘Outdoor Recreation Program Directory & Data Resource Guide,’ which to this day continues to serve as an unparalleled benchmarking tool for college and university outdoor recreation programs. His own outdoor program — BYU Outdoors Unlimited — was a treasure trove to anyone from the industry who took the time to visit. David firmly believed that if the services of a college or university outdoor program were appropriately utilized, the result would be the development of a student’s character, outdoor skills, recreational appreciation and enjoyment, and ecological, social, and institutional appreciation and concern. David will surely be missed by all of those who came in contact with him, including me.”
