Did you hear?… Regional travel is "in"

Since Sept. 11, there's been lots of talk about regional travel being the only segment of the travel industry that will do well for the next year.

Since Sept. 11, there’s been lots of talk about regional travel being the only segment of the travel industry that will do well for the next year. Ski areas are courting the “rubber tire market” more than ever before and the quick flight to Aspen or Sun Valley for a long weekend of skiing becomes less and less attractive to skiers. According to The (Portland) Oregonian newspaper, Oregon’s Tourism Department is addressing the situation with its “low-cost” remedy. That remedy is a $200,000 newspaper and radio campaign called, “It’s Easy to Take a Great Vacation in Oregon.” The program will suggest in-state trips. Portland International Airport’s passenger rate has dropped 30.8 percent since Sept. 11, and the state’s $6 billion tourism industry is beginning to feel the affects of that drop.
